# White screen on Windows

> White or flashing window, or WebView2 is already installed. Every fix in order

  <Step title="Wait 10-20 seconds, then quit completely and start again">
    1. Click **^** next to the clock.
    2. Right-click the SoundCloud Desktop icon.
    3. Choose **Quit**.

    Still running or no window at all: **Task Manager** (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) -> end `soundcloud-desktop.exe` (portable: `soundcloud-desktop-portable.exe`) and `msedgewebview2.exe`.

  <Step title="Restart the computer">
    Then start SoundCloud Desktop.

  <Step title="Using the portable version? Use the installer instead">
    It installs WebView2 by itself.

  <Step title="Install WebView2 from Microsoft, even if Windows says it is there">
    1. Open the [WebView2 page on the Microsoft site](https://developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-edge/webview2/).
    2. Download the **Evergreen Standalone Installer**, version **x64**.
    3. Right-click the file -> **Run as administrator**.
    4. Restart the computer.

    You do not need Edge for this.

  <Step title="Still white: remove WebView2 and install it again">
    Open Windows **Settings -> Apps**, remove **Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime**, restart the computer and repeat step 4. Not in the list: skip this step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="The installer says WebView2 is already installed">
    <Warning>
      Save the registry first: **Win+R**, `regedit`, **File -> Export**.
    </Warning>

    Delete these three keys in `regedit`. Skip a key that does not exist.

    Then run the WebView2 installer as administrator again and restart the computer.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn off your VPN, proxy in TUN mode, AdGuard and the antivirus web shield">
    Start the app. It works: add `soundcloud-desktop.exe` and `msedgewebview2.exe` to the exclusions of that program and turn it back on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn on software rendering">
    Do you see the sign-in screen? Click **Continue without signing in**: Settings open without signing in.

    Turn on **Settings -> Appearance -> Performance -> Software rendering** and click **Restart now**.

    Then choose **Light** in the same section: without the GPU, the CPU has to draw the effects. Windows and Linux only.

    Update the graphics driver. The window is completely blank: step 10.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reset the app data">
    Downloaded tracks are deleted and you will need to sign in again.

    1. Quit the app completely, as in step 1.
    2. Paste `%LOCALAPPDATA%` into the **File Explorer** address bar and delete the folder `com.soundcloud.desktop`. Do the same for `%APPDATA%`. Or uninstall the app with **Delete the application data** ticked.
    3. Install the app again:

  <Step title="Nothing helped and the window draws nothing at all" id="render-file">
    1. Quit the app completely, as in step 1.

    2. Press **Win+R**, type `cmd`, press **Enter**.

    3. Paste the command and press **Enter**:

       mkdir "%APPDATA%\com.soundcloud.desktop" 2>nul & echo {"softwareRendering":true}> "%APPDATA%\com.soundcloud.desktop\render_mode.json"
       ```

    4. Start the app.

    To undo, delete the file `render_mode.json` from `%APPDATA%\com.soundcloud.desktop`.
